INCH CLUTHA RIVER AND ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held in Houlston's hotel, Stirling, on Friday evening. There were present : — Messrs Paterson (chairman), Lawson, M'Donald, Mosley, and Smaill. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
A deputation of ratepayers waited on the Board, and presented a petition signed by nineteen ratepayers protesting against the proposed rate of Is (id per acre, and Gd in the pound proposed to bo levied at this meeting.
Mr W. A. Mosley stated that he was appointed by the settlers of Inch Clutha to present their petition and lay their grievances before the Board, and to ask the Board to reduce the proposed rate to the same that was levied last year ; that the settlers were not able to pay such a rate as was proposed to be levied, and after a lengthened discussion on the subject, — The Chairman stated that the matter would be considered by the Board at its meeting. The deputation thanked the Board and withdrew.
A letter was read from Messrs Gillies, Street, and Hislop, Dunedin, in answer to the Board's application for permission to allow the sinking fund of loan to stand over for two years so that the Board would have the use of the money for that time to finish necessary works, replying that the mortgagee had no objections to the application being granted. — Received. Mr Smaill stated that the Board should stick to the original agreement with the mortgagee and that the sinking fund should be dealt with accordingly. Mr Mosley moved — " That consideration of same be held over till next meeting." Seconded by Mr M'Donald, agreed to. A letter was received from Mr Noil, manager for Mr Cameron, stating that as instructed he had taken the timber from the old culvert near Mr Bell's xo lengthen the culvert that the Inspector put on river bank road, near Mr Cameron's property, Matau Branch. He also desired to call the Board's attention to the state of the two small culverts near lower end of main centre road as, at very high tide, the water gets in and Hoods Mr Cameron's crop. It was moved by Mr Smaill, seconded by Mosley — " That the Inspector attend to same." — Carried. A letter was received from Mr James Rutherford, farmer, near lower end of Island, stating that he -wanted a bridge put over the main centre ditch at the back of his property, so that he could get access to his place, because at the present time he had no way to get out or in but by trespassing on private property. lie stated that he was willing to assist the Board by supplying bearera and would also do the labour if the Board furnished the decking. It was moved by Mr Smaill, seconded by Mr Mosley — " That the Board, agrees to meet Mr Rutherford half way, by sup- • plying i?he decking' of timber now laying
on Mr Watt's property, Mr Rutherford to-j do the carting." — Carried.
