BALCLUTHA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the above Council wasjheld in the Athenaeum^*. Hall, on Tuesday evening. There were *• present — The. Mayor, and- Messrs^ Mason, \ Hutchins, -Wood, Stewart,- Gri^or, 'and S Gawn. " _ / The minutes -of the. previous-meeting;;-;-were read and confirmed. Specifications for the formation and metalling of three chains of the. upper or'-. South end of Clyde-street were laid on i the table, . • Mr ' Mason said all ""the.; members of" the"'" Council' were in favour of calling for ten- : dersfor-the work, but he would like to "■ know whether the Council were in a position to 'incur further^ liabilities- in- theumeantime. The Mayor replied that he. believed the « necessary arrangements with the Bank, would be made by the nexfe' ordinary meeting, and the Finance, -Committee would - then report upon the financial position of ,'-"•'■ the Borough.-' . Mr Stewart moved—" That tenders be**"*-' called for-- the work. " — Seconded by Mr 1.• Mason, and carried. • Mr Stewart urged upon the- Council the '•'•- necessity of lighting the lamps, in Gordon a. and Douglas'Streets -'for tha convenience r of the strangers coming into the towshipv • from the railway Station. The Mayor replied that>he was afraid- . the finances of the Council would not permit of any lamps being lit for the- -winter. After a brief diacuo.Hon -the matter was ■ dropped.' . Mr Wood pointed out that the lease of " the 80-acre'~reserve in East AVard- would '.':< expire in May., rV He reminded the Council that the inhabitants 6$ that Ward had expressed their anxiety to have a, reserve for*>depasturing purposes , on that side of tlie river. Perhaps some arrangement could ;•. now be made fortheir having the 80-acre'-reserve. "'.,.' Mr Grigor said -'that if the-inliabitantau would agree- to take out- licenses to the?* amount of the rent for the. past year, then.ii he thought they should have the reserve,"., but not other wiae...
