WAIPAHI
A meeting of the Waipahi Progress Committee was held on Sept. 13, when all the members were present with one exception. The minutes of the former meeting having been read and confirmed, the Secretary read a large amount of correspondence, which was received and noted. The Chairman gave a long report of the action and result of the deputation, in which he was their delegate, to the Attorney-General in Duuedin to object to the alteration of the ridings resolved by the Clutha County Council on the 31st of May (a report of which deputation appeared in our issue of the 13th inst.) The following resolution was then carried : — " That the Waipahi Progress Committee, seeing how objectionable and inconvenient the alterations of the ridings proposed by Councillor Dallas are to the electors in this district,-* respectfully request the Clutha County Council to rescind the resolution of 31st o£ May, as suggested by the Hon. "the Attorney- General to. the deputation on the 7th Sept., and ask that the Council may be pleased to assist the electors in any action that may be taken whereby a more equalised representation may be obtained for them, as at present they feel the great injustice under which t they are placed." It was also resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Chairman of the Council and the member for Waipahi, with a request that it be read at the next meeting of the County Council. The Committee passed a vote of thanks to Mr Roberts for acting as their delegate, and recorded their entire satisfaction and acquiescence with the the action of the deputation and the result ' of its endeavours. It Avas resolved that a subscription list be at once opened for the purpose of surveying and fencing in the cemetery site, and that the secretary be instructed to find out who Avould survey it, and Avhat the cose would be. It Avas also resolved that the secretary Avrite to Mr Usher, Resident Engineer, asking him to make arrangements Avith the contractor for the Waipahi-Tapanui railway to take the material for forming the embankment between the main line and the 10-chain peg either from the cutting at 56 miles or the district road at 55 miles 07 chains (where it is very steep), and not from the flat adjoining the railway. Resolved, that a deputation wait on Mr Paterson, the County Engineer, when he next comes to Waipahi, to draw his attention to the want of a bridge, and to the objections to having the railway bridge made fit for general traffic, and to request Mr Paterson to fix on the best site for a bridge, and to report thereon to the Clutha Comity Council. It was reported that to plank and Aviden the railway bridge and form tho approaches would cost half as much as a separate bride. The- latter Avould also save the expense of gates and a gate-keeper, Avhich, besides the inconvenience, would in a few years amount to as much as would build a dray-bridge. It Avas further resolved that it is desirable to form a public library for the district. The meeting then adjourned.
