BRUCE COUNTY CO UNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Bruce County Council was held at Milton on Tuesday. There were present 'Messrs Henry Clark (chairman), Murray, Wayne, Duff, Calder, Robertson, Smith, and Petrie.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
A letter was read from the Secretary to the Tuapeka Hospital asking assistance towards the support of that institution, and. stating that two of the inmates were from the Bruce County.
Mr Smith moved, and Mr Robertson seconded, that the sum of LSO be granted to the Tuapeka Hospital. — Agreed to.
A letter was read from John M'Kissock, poundkeeper, Stirling, asking a sum of money to repair and subdivide the pound at Stirling.
Mr Robertson moved, and Mr Petrie seconded, that the sum of L 6 be granted to John M'Kissock for ' repairs to his pound, he to keep the pound and act as poundkeeper for three years. — Agreed to.
A letter from James Whytock to the same effect was also read.
Mr Smith moved and Mr Petrie seconded that the sum of L 6 for repairs to yard be granted upon the same terms. — Agreed to.
A letter was read from Inspector Thompson, stating that Sergeant Comyn had resigned his appointment as Inspector of Slaughterhouses, and recommending Con-, stable William Poole (Waitahuna) to be appointed in his place.
Mr Poole was appointed to the office.
Mr Murray moved and Mr Robertson seconded that the sum charged by the Inspector of Slaughterhouses be tliat provided for in the Slaughterhouses Act, 1877.— Agreed to.
The Inspector reported that all culverta on main road were too small to carry away the water in times of flood.
It was agreed that as the culverts required repairs they should be also widened.
The Inspector's monthly report on roads and bridges was read, and the montldy pay-sheet, amounting to L 199 13s 3d.
The report was adopted, and the paysheet passed for payment.
Consideration of protective works to road at Mr Thomas Murray's, Mt. Stuart, was postponed till next meeting.
Mr Smith moved and Mr Duff seconded that the alteration requested by the Tuapeka County Council of boundaries between the Tuapeka County to Crookburn be agreed to. — Carried.
A letter was read from Mr W. A. Murray, M.H.R. for Bruce, asking whether the Council Avould be willing to purchase the Kaitangata Railway and extend the same to Wangaloa, if the Government guaranteed .3 per cent, on the cost, and gave them the Tuakitoto and Kaitangata Lakes into the bargain.
Mr Smith moved and Mr Petrie seconded that the Clerk acknowledge the receipt bf letter, and inform Mr Murray that the Council endorsejthe letter forwarded to him by the Chairman, but* that the Council refuse the offer to purchase the Kaitangata Railway. — Agreed to.
Mr Robertson moved and Mr Murray seconded that the sum of LSO be granted to Waihola District Road Board for works on new district road from Waihola to the Taieri Beach. — Agreed to.
Mr Galder moved and Mr Petrie seconded that the sum of L2OO be granted to the Crichton Road Board to metal road from Main South road to Lovells Flat railway station, and to repair Lovells Creek bridge. — After discussion Mr Calder asked that this motion be adjourned until next meeting. — Agreed to.
Mr Duff moved and Mr Smith seconded that the sum of LSO be granted to Waipori District Road Board to protect the road at Waipori from the encroachments of the river. — Agreed to.
Mr Calder moved that the Clerk write to the Railway Department, respectfully requesting them to erect cattle yards at Lovells Flat railway station.
The motion was seconded by Mr Smith and carried.
, Mr Calder moved that the Government be asked to connect the station at Lovels Fiat by telegraph.
Seconded by Mr Duff, and agreed to. Mr Petrie moved — "That the sum of LIOO be granted to the Matau District Road Board for the metalling of part of road from Stirling to Main South Road; Hillend, and part of road leading to Benhar coalpits. "
Mr, Murray seconded the motion pro forma, which on being put to the meeting was lost.
Mr Calder moved — "That a vote of thanks be accorded to Councillor Wayne for his gratuitous services in attending on behalf of the Council the recent County Council Conference at Wellington."
Seconded by Mr Murray, and carried.
' At a special meeting of ' the Council the same afternoon, Mr Robertson moved, and Mr Murray seconded — " That the Bye-laws on slaughter-houses be amended, so that a separate fee be charged for killing large cattle Only, and a separate fee for killing- small; only, at a reduced fee.) the present fee to remain for killing both large and Small cattle."
After a discussion, Mr Robertson obtained 'leave to postfione his motion till next meeting.
The Council then adjourned
