"Yesterday morning the drapery establishment ofjMessrs Thomson, Strang, and Co. had a narrow escape from heing burned down. About six o'clock smoke was observed issuing from ono of the doors whieVconnect^the building with Mr A. T. Dunning's establishment. The fire-bell of the Duuedin Brigade gave an alarm. Only a few of tho members of the Brigade put in an appearance ; but the Ifire^whidi had (originated on the floor of the milliners [!room abovo the warehouse, was promptly got under." " Early this morning Mr Dunning discovered that the upper part of Thomson, Strang, and Co.'a building was on fire, and he at once souuded the alarm from tho tower station. It appears that the firm dismissed their porter a couple of days ago, and that since then the live ashes have been collected by the boys and by them placed in a box. Last night this was put into a fire-place which had not heen in use for'somo yoars, and the ashes, burning all night, act firo to the floor of the building." WAREHOUSE IS AGAIN OPENED. GREAT SALVAGE SALE Of DRAPERY, MILLINERY, CLOTHING. ('Daily Times.') "Through some ashes^' having j been left over night in a wooden box, Messrs Thomson, Strang, and Co.'s premises had a narrow escape from being burnt down yesterday morning. About six o'clock a person in tho employ of Mr Dunning, next door, observed smoke coming from a door communicating^between the two buildings, and on further search it was found that the floor of the milliners' room was partly burnt away."
