A paragraph lately appeared in several papers giving an extraordinary account of a religious movement taking place in British India. According to the statement no fewer than 16,000 persons in the district of Tinnevelly have, owing mainly to tho ministrations of Bishop Caldwell, in seven recent months placed themselves under instruction with a view to baptism ; and village after village, laying aside its heathenism, is seeking 'admission to the Christian fold. " The event," it is further stated is" without precedent." .Certainly, assuming the. siai&ment to be correct, the event is unprecedented ; but the Madras Mail casts doubt on the whole story./ The first! news of the affair, says the Mail, " came from London," and it adds, " our Tinnevelly correspondent, who lives in the heart of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel's mission districts/has told us nothing about so remarkable an event." If there really is any?reaaon for doubt on thesubject, which we do not by' any means /assume (remarks the Pall Mall Gazette) the _I*rpp_igatipn f Society will, it is to be i»"hope'dptf#»oa-f7^]e^;it up by the publication evidence. . . •- A:-yy 'A ?;;;-, ?, . 7 yy. ■''-•r . ■- / • • - .■_-■■• .y^yict&yy' .. ■■• -- - ' •■'..''* '•-'" -"--A'y^WAA y '-.'• •
