MATAU FARMERS' CLUB.
An adjourned meeting of members of the above Club was held in Mr Rae's Hotel, Stirling, on Friday evening last. There were present Messrs G. Inglis (in the chair), Parker, Reid, Anderson, Horn, Wright, Petrie, and Joseph Smith junior. Mr Petrie moved that the name of the Society be "The Matau Farmers' Club." Mr Wright seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr Petrie moved that the annual subscription be ss. Seconded by Mr Smith, and carried. Mr B. Parker was appointed interim honorary Treasurer, and Mr Joseph Smith, jun., interim honorary Secretary. It was pointed out that an impression had been created in certain quarters that the present Society would be in odposition to '.he Clutha Agricultural and Pastoral Society.
Mr Anderson explained that nothing" was further from the intention of the promoters. They wished to give that, Society all the support they possibly could, and it was their intention tha"t the Matau Club should rather be a feeder to the Clutha Society. The Matau Society never contemplated having a stock or other show. Their object was to obtain full scientific and practical information in connection with agriculture, to disseminate these amongst the members, to prepare and discuss papers, to offer prizes for improved stock, implements, machinery, &c. He thought that by holding* regular meetings to communicate mutual information and advice, the members of the Society would do much good. He regretted the smallness of the meeting that evening, but believed it was occasioned by the want. of a suitable place of meeting, and also because the objects of bhe Society were not fully known and understood. He moved that the meeting be adjourned to Friday, 25th October, at 8 o'clock, in the Schoolhouse, Inch Clutha, and that in the meantime the Secretary furnish each present with subscription lists, so that they might obtain additions to the membership.
Mr Parker seconded tbe motion, and after the members present had corroborated the remarks made by Mr Anderson the same was carried.
The meeting then adjourned.
