"Yesterday morning the drapery establishment of Messrs Thomson, Strang, and Co. had a narrow escapejfrom being burned down. About six o'clock smoke was observed issuing from one of the doors whichjeonnect the^building with Mr A. T. Dunning's establishment. "The fire-bell of the Dunedin Brigade gave an alarm. . " Early this morniug Mr Dunning discovered that the upper part of Thomson, Strang, J and Co.'s building was on fire, and he at once sounded the alarm from the tower station. It appears that the firm dismissed their porter a couple of days ago, and that since then the live ashes have been collected by the boys and by them placed in a box.
