WAIPAHI.

A public meeting which had been called by advertisement was held at Ross' Waipahi Hotel on Tuesday evening, to consider as to the boundaries of the neAv Road Board and other matters. Mr W. H. S. Roberts was called .to the chair.

Mr Ross moved and Mr John Cumming seconded the folloAving resolution, which led to considerable discussion and several amendments, which were all lost. It Avas ultimately carried by a majority of one — <c That the proposed neAv Road Board District be bounded on the west by the boundary of the Clutha County to the Leithen Creek, thence by the' Leithen Creek to the Pomahaka River,- thence by the Pomahaka River to- the Wairuna stream, thence by the Wairuna streamaud the boundary of tlie Clinton Road District to the south-west corner of the Clinton Road District, thence by a right line running due Avest to the western boundary of the Clutha County." Mr Daniel Clarke, Avho strongly opposed the portion now called Wairuna Riding being included in the new Road Board District, started a petition against its being so included ; he Avould prefer joining the Clinton Road District. It was moved by Mr Ross and seconded by Mr Cumming — " That the Chairman be requested to forward a copy of the foregoing resolution to Captain Mackenzie, at Wellington, to be

affixed to the petition for the neiv Road District." This was also carried by a majority of one.

The attention of the meeting was called to tlie fearful state of the road and the dangerous condition of the footbridge between Ross' Hotel ancl the Waipahi Railway Station. Mr Ross moved, Mr Wm. Scobie seconded, aud itAvas carried unanimously— " That ive petition the Clutha County Council to grant a sum of not less than Ll 00 to form and metal the Avorst portions of the road from Ross' Waipahi Hotel to the Waipahi Railway Station." It Avas admitted that so small a sum Avould do very little towards rendering feuch a SAvamp passable, and the meeting trusted to the liberality of the Council to vote mqre if they could afford to do so. It Avas moved by Mr Cumming, seconded by Mr Young, and carried unanimously — " That a petition to the following effect be forwarded to T. Arthur, Esq., Manager of Railways, l'uvercargill, and Messrs M' Landless, Hepburn, ancl Co., Dnnedin: — ' That your petitioners find that " Otaria," the name of the siding at 51 miles 44 chains, is the same as the village and postoffice on the main road Mataura to Clinton and that great inconvenience is experienced by your petitioners in consequence of the confusion caused by the two places having the same name, and Avhen goods are forwarded to this siding the letters and invoices are sent to the postoffice, which is fully eight miles distant over the hills, and to which there is no road. Tour petitioners therefore pray that the name of the siding may be altered and called by the local name of " DiA'ers' " or any other name that may suit your convenience." This was considered a most important matter, as the inconvenience was daily increasing. The necessity for a small shed to shelter parcels and small orders from the 'weather Avas broached, but no resolution adopted ; but those interested intend taking the matter in hand, as it is impossible to know at all times by Avhich train the orders may arrive, and all goods are more or less injured by being left on a platform exposed to the weather. The want of a burial ground was then brought before the meeting, the nearest oue at presont being at Clinton, Avhich is nearly ten miles distant. Mr Ross moved, Mr D. Campbell seconded, and it Avas carried unanimously — "That the Waste Lands Board be requested to grant ten acres oi section 52, block vir., Waipahi, for a cemetery." It Avas moved by Mr Cumming, seconded by Mr .Ross, and carried — " That it is desirable that a Progress Conmiittee be formed to look after the interests of this district." The following gentlemen were nominated sis a Progress Committee : — Messrs John Cumming, T. Hewitt, Ross, Roberts, Wm. Scobie, Wm. Taylor, ancl Win. Young.

A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting.
