Ed in' th'4 neighbourhood, my strong -conviction : is that scarlet fever ww at) . t-hq bottom of .the fatality. , : .This ease occurred oh the -flat, and -at, present; the. disease, ifj active in- an'arl]acent f house. The cases are riot specially localised, as -mai.y having .occurred in <h<* cottages! on' j,he hills as^in those on thefiafc. Judging' frbm the preseut appearance's the disease cannot be said :to be spreading rupidly. About one-half- of the -whole number of cases seem to have, cropped up about a .fortnight ago. As far as I could discover, there were only three cases (on- Saturday last) so recent that the rush was .visible But when we bear iv mind 'that about a score ot -children have been ill within the month, aiid that" th'e' contagious element is strongest for a week or two after the actual crisis of the fever ■is: past, the probability 0 f fresh, eases appearing is -obvious. unless stringent incisures are adopted to prevent them.- I- an\, &c. "WiliiTam Rogers. Mr Wayne moved that so soon as the 'Clutha' Council, is prepared to take over control of the bridge the balance in hand .for repairs "be handed over to it. Seconded by Mr Duff, and carried. ■ ; . , SLAUGHTER-HOUSES. . . . y The Chairman and Messrs Wayne and Landels were apixunted a committee to prepare and submit a bye-law with reference to slaughter-houses. inspector's report. The following report by the Inspector of Works was read: — SIR, — I have the honour to report to you on the state of the roads and bridges, &c, for the month ending Feb. 28, 1878. The whole of the roads still remain in good repair. The surface-man has been engaged in gathering loose stones off the road and in repairing some of the formation on road Clarkesville to Bound Hill. I also had a surface-man engaged in gathering loose stones on the road between Lovells Plat arid Balclutha, which is now finished. One of tho planks on the Taieri bridge gave way since my. last report, and it has been replaced by the .surface-man. On First bridge, Glenore, some of the planking gave' way, and as the longitudinal plauks had to be .removed to get it repaired, I have removed all the partly decayed planking before laying down the longitudinal planks again, and tilled in. the space between the longitudiual planks with timber instead of metal. The other bridges on the same road have required no repairs since my last report. Some-of the perpendicular bolts in the trusses to the Matau bridge had got slack, partly by the timher shrinking and partly by the strain on the bridge bringing all the bolts to ' their proper bearing. I bave engaged the blacksmith at Stirling to tighten up all the bolts that require to be screwed up. Specifications have been made out for the repairs to Tokomairiro bridge, and for maintenance metal on road Milton to Balclutha and Clarkesville to Rouud Hill, and tenders called for the works, tenders to be in at this meeting. I have inspected some work done under the Council grant by the Crichton Road Board. Tlie work is on the district road leading from main south road at Lovells Flat towards the railwaystation, and consists of 25 chains of metalling. The metal has been laid down on the road, broken, and spread, and I have passed it. I have also inspected some work done by the Kaitangata Boad Board near Kaitangata. The work consists of road formation and box culverts, and I have passed it. FINANCE. Accounts to the amount of Ll6l 8s lOd were passed for payment. The Treasurer reported that tho receipts for the month were L 42 IGs 6d. TENDERS. Repairs to Tokomairiro bridge. — G. Wilson, L 247 ;J. Spence, L 234 10s. Mr Spence's tender accepted. Supply of 300 yards metal at Glenore.-— J. C. Gordon, Os 9d per cubic yard ; Mr Kavanagh, 6s Bd. Mr Kavanagh's tender accepted. ■ Supply of metal at Tokomairiro bridge, &c. — J. C. Gordon, 12s 3d per cubic yard ; Mr Peak, 10s 9d ; Mr,Beattie,.los. Mr Beattie's tender was accepted. After some routine business, the meeting adjourned.
