Clutha Caledonian Games.
President, Mr John Dunne; Vice-President, Mr Roberb Hogg * Treasurer, Mr John Paterson; Secretary, Mr Charles Hawson, 'Director'- : Messrs j. G-. Smith, Peter Mason, Robert Grigor, A. 0. Campbell, John Low, W. Stewart, Robert Cramond.
The first sports of the newly established Clutha Caledonian Society were held on the Lower Reserve, Balclutha, on Tuesday last, Boxing. Day. . The weather was delightful, the attendance was about 500, and the sports proved a complete success.
A large amount of time and trouble had been expended by the directors in preparing the ground and making the whole arrangements, and it must 'be gratifying to them to find that their efforts were so fully seconded by the public, and that the first sports of the Society have proved so successful, and given so much satisfaction to all concerned. A little before 11 o'clock, a procession, composed of the office-bearers, directors, and members of the Society, started from the Crown Hotel, and . headed by a piper in full Highland costume, inarched to the ground, where, on arrival, they were, greeted with three hearty cheers. The sports were then shortly commenced. In the various events there was keen competition for the honours and- the substantial prizes, and the public interest was fully sustained till the close. The handicap flat race was undoubtedly the event of the day. Cowie and Stanbropk tied, and agreed to divide the stakes, and have a silver medal each. There was a refreshment booth oil the ground, and Mr Keenan had also a licensed booth, both of which seemed to be fully patronised. There was, however, very little evidence of over indulgence -, and the crowd was very orderly, with the exception of one disgraceful little row, the chief actor in which has met' with his deserts in th<. J. P. Court. It was past 7 o'clock before the programme of the sports was concluded, the tilting match being the last eVent. This over, three hearty cheers were given for the Clutha Caledonian Society, and the crowd quietly dispersed.' '
