VOLUNTEERING.

The first competition of the No. 2 Clutha Rifles for the team for the Ladiea' Shield took place on Saturday morning, 4th inst. , when nine men competed. The ranges fired over were 200, 400, 500, and 600 yards. The morning was fine and dull, but the shooting was not quite up to the .mark. Only one man (Henderson) fired through without a miss. We would like to see our men make better shooting before going to meet the teams from other Companies. We 'give the five highest scores :

The old system of painting the targets and marking was adopted, as, in spite of repeated applications, particulars of the new system cannot be got.

On Saturday morning last, the second competition took place. The ranges were 200, 400, and 500 yards, 5 shots at each, with usual targets. The morning was bright, with a light breeze from the right front. Including the sighting shot at 500 yards, Lieut. Henderson made the splendid score of 5 consecutive bull's-eyes, and then a centre. At 400 yards, Vol. James Hogg made the capital score of 18. There were ten men at the targets, and the shooting was a great improvement on that of the first competition. There is one more competition for places in the team, next Saturday morning. We give the five highest scores on Saturday morning, and the five highest aggregate scores for the two competitions : — 200 400 500 Toyda yds yils tal. Lieut. Henderson ... *12 "16 '19—47 Capt.
