SITUATION".
The following impudent petition is said to be the handiwork of H. S. Fish, junior, M 'Daren, Lloyd, and other fanatic abolitionists in Dunedin, and it is reported the signatures of Messrs E. B. Cargill, R. W 7 ilson, Rattray, and others were adhibited at the request of the Ministry. This of course is denied, but denials have been so frequently given in similar circumstances when the facts Avere afterwards proved, that the public are fully entitled to hold their own opinions upon the subject. Be this as it may, the petition was numerously signed in Dunedin, and was forwarded to Wellington on Tuesday. The celebrated promoters had, however, previously sent it by telegraph to the Wellington papers, and Messrs Maudrew, Larnach, and Stout, at once replied.
The folloAving is the petition : — Dunedin, 16th September, 1876. To James Macandrew, Esq. , Robert Stout, Esq., W. J. M. Larnach, Esq., the members for Dunedin in the House of Representatives.
Gentlemen, — We, the undersigned electors of the City of Dunedin, feel impelled at this juncture in public affairs to express to you our opinion of the political situation at Wellington.
We are Avearied and disappointed Avith the prolonged debates of this session on Piako SAvamp, Separation, Abolition, Disqualification, etc. etc. We are of opinion that direct and exhaustive discussions on finance and counties should have been held long ago, for the benefit alike of representatives and electors.
We think it is liigh time that all -members of the House combined to put a stop to personalities, wranglings, and factious obstruction, and addressed themselves strictly to the business of the country. — Y*Ve haA r e, &c.
