THE BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir.— In yoiir number of Friday, 25fcla inst., an " Observer" attempts to, make believe that tlie rnonoy was paid into the Benevolent Institution before " Subscriber's" letter appeared in the Leader of 18th ihst. He does not tell us when it was paid. That is a mistake 6a His part. It would perhaps have saved a little further exposure of tlie matter. He tells us it was not paid to the el-edit of Robert Campbell as formerly, (what hAs that to do with the not paying of the money?) He must know it never was paid to the credit of that person ; it was too well knownfrom Balclutha to Tapamii, and in Dunedhi as well, that it was* for some years, a ; public affair> and chronicled as such in the local papers. "Observer" is now giving "credit" to whom credit is due." A fine old saw is that. But lit me remind " Observer" that there, is very little credit due to the man who could keep lip the money that was gathered for a charitable purpose foteieveu'lhoiitlis, add trade witKil! to: tiii'&wd
profit, or 'otherwise (putting it in the mildest form) defrauding the widow and orphan, the poor ami n«.edy, of what wns their just right, be it over so small. And he ought to pay interest oil the amount he has thus used. If I aui wrong in the amount named that was available, 1 am sorry to say there are a great many more, who ought to know better, in the same error. Ana if the money is now paid, it could only liuVe beer, so say twenty-four hours before the publication of the Leader on Friday, the '25th; In proof of niy statement, I herewith enclose a letter from the Secretary of the Benevolent Institution, dated 23rd (Wednesday), winch I hope you will kindly insert along with this, for the information of the subscribers in general, and which I think will throw aomo light on when the money was paid,— if pidd. Please accept my apology for taking tip so much of your valuable paper. — 1 am, &c, A Subscriber. Otag'6 Benevolent Institution, Dunedin, August 23, 1876. Dear Sir, — I laid your letter before the Committee re proceeds of concert and ball at your shed. They are of opinion 'that some action should be taken in the matter, with, a view of recovering the money for the Institution. Should the people who got tho affair up not wi'Ah to take the initiative in the matter, the name or names of tho parties concerned might be submitted, with "a view to action being taken here.— Yours, &c, Eichd. Quin, R. Campbell, Esq., 'Secretary. Glenfalloch.
