HARBOR AT THE NUGGETS.

The following copy of a letter for\vardedto the member for the district in the General Assembly has been 'bended to us for publication :-*- --" Alexandra, Otago, " July 4, 1876- --■" To the M.H.1.. for Clutha. " Sir, — Having been requested by •some of ray fellow-colonists to draw .'your attention to the following subject, I beg to state that the natural facilities <of the Nuggets for a harbor cannot •be surpassed. A harbor can be made •equal to the harbor at Portsmouth, in England, supposed to be the best harbor in the world. Tbe Nugget harbor 'would be an outlet to the whole of the Molyneux Valley, abounding in coal : and other minerals, and the best of agricultural land in Otago. The natural harbor, as it is now, is supposed to be : safe for large vessels all the year round. Material for any marine work is plentiful on the ground. One of the leading 'lighthouses of New Zealand is placed on Nugget Point, Otago would derive "more benefit from such a piece of work, ■by opening up the country at such a ? place, than possibly can be anticipated, ■as there is no harbor between Dunedin : and the Bluff. I consider that it is my duty to draw } r our attention to the above, as I have no doubt tbat a harbor ■ at the Nuggets would be of more benefit to the Island tban any ofthe harbors ■ proposed. Please endeavor to get an - engineer's report on the suitability and ■ probable cost of a harbor at the Nug- - gets.
