Town Council.

*_ The ordinary ineoinug ui „.i . i'own Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Th'ftre werp present His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors &ilgour, Mason, Dunno, Hope, and Tosh. Ttie minu L Ps of the previous meeting waß read and confinnad The Clerk reported that Mr ,John Dunne had been duly elected a member for South Ward, in room of Mr St d wart resigned; also that tho statutory declaration had been signed by Mr Dunne. The Mayor on behalf ofthe Works Committee, reported that an examination had been made of Clyde-street, at the corner of Lanark-street, and the Committee recommended that the drainage water be carried from that point to the river in pipps, or by culvert. On the motion of Councillor Dunne, seconded by Councillor Hope, the report was adopted. The Works Committee was instructed to en- ! quire and report at next meeting, as to the most efficient and economical method of currying out the recommendation. The following tenders for suppVying metal for Hasborough road were opened : — s. d. per yard. D. P. M'Kenzie, at 6 9 „ Chirnside & Gavin, - 6 0 „ Alex. Doull, - -60 ,; Beaton Marr, - - 5. li „ W. Morton, - - 5 6 „ Richard Lang, - 5 fi „ John Nelson, - f> 5 „ On the motion of Councillor Mason, seconded by Councillor Dunne, the tender of Mr Nelson was accepted. The Clerk laid on the table plans and specifications, by the Town Engineers, for the formation of Charlotte. William and George-streets, aud reported that to save time the Works Committee had taken action in the matter by calling for tenders for the work. The action of the Committee wis approved. Councillor Hope again called att mtion to the hollow in Drumclog-street — opposite the Schoolhonse—t y which nothing yet had been done. The Mayor said the matter was in tho hands of the Works Committee, and would be attended to without delay. Councillor Dunne called attention to the fact of the approach to the Railway terminus, being obstructed by material for building the Railway Bridge. He did not know whether the obstruction was caused by the Government, or tbe contractor, but the road had been made for the convenience of the cabs plying to the station, and should not be allowed to be obstructed by building material. The Mayor said the contractor had very little room for laying down his tiinl>e--, and the use of the road would be a great convneienca to him. He (His Worship) believed there was plenty of room for all the vehicles at present plving to the station, apart from the portions of the road obstructed. Tf a larger number of cabs- were employed, then the road could be cleared, or the other portion of the road widened. Councillor Dunne said, tlie obstruction was caused through carelessness in leaving timber lying about, not by using the road for stacking it away. The road was mado expressly for the use of the cabs, and if the Council now allowed it to be monopolised by building m iterial it might be difficult afterwards to get it cleared. Councillor Hogr* concurred with the remarks made by Councillor Dunne. After some further remarks tho subject dropped. A conversational discussion ensued with re- j ference.to the dangerous nit ire of Hasborough. I Road, and the impossible state of the road Stirl- j ing to the Kailwav terminus, but no action in the matter was resolved upon. Councillor Dunne gave notice that at next meeting he would move that plans and specifications, bo prepared for the formation of Johnstreet, jl The meotins; then adjourned. / l|
