FROZEN MEAT.
The hon. secretaries to the movement for the shipment of frozen meat, writing from Sydney under date February 23rd, state, that " nearly four-fifths of the required funds are now in hand and promised. "Good progress is being made in preparing the machinery for use on board ship. The whole plant will, be erected and thoroughly tested at the Frigorific Works, Paddington, before it is placed on board ; and Mr Nicolle reports that he expects the first trial apparatus will be at .work- in a month from this dtae. 'As J soon as the machinery has been proved efficient, the processes of killing* and freezing* will be commenced. In face of the .efforts now being vigorously made in America to anticipate us in the home market, it has become essential that no time be lost in completing the mechanical and financial arrangements, and that every exertion be made to open quickly and thoroughly established in Europe a trade fpr the supply of meats of the best quality and condition. It must be borne in mind that more than £5,000 are yet' required, and the honorary secretaries would urge those who have not yet contributed to send in their names without further delay."
A Minister of Crail had been longannoyed by the drowsy propensities in cliurch of a farmer, one of his parishioners, one "David Cowan, of Troustrie," and, remonstrating on the subject, had his patience won by two cartloads •of coals, which the offender engaged to drive to the manse door. Nevertheless, a few Sundays afterwards, Mr Cowan, soon after the commencement of the sermon, fell into a sound sleep as formerly ; and not only so,' but made so much noise as ' to disturb not only the sitters near him, but the minister. The. latter bore it for aiong while, but at last, being unable to stand it any ! longer, desired the people- in the north , loft to "wauken. David Cowan." David, awakening suddenly, arid forgetting w'herehe 'was,"asked the minister,;," Didna I drive twa cartloads of coals to the manse last week that ye might let me sleep!" ' "True," replied the' minister !* { jbut T did not- agree : to let.yau^sn'ore."
