Town Council.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Balclutha To-wn Council was held ia the Council Chambers, on Tuesday evening, last week. ■

* There were present, His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Hogg. Kilgour, Hope, Mason and Tosh. .

The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed.

A letter was read from Mr Alexander Stewart, resigining his seat as member for South Ward.

Councillor Hope moved, that Councillor Stewart's resignation be accepted, and the fine remitted.

Seconded by Councillor Kilgour, and carried.

An application by Messrs Lamond, Martin, and Co., for permission to erect a horse post in front of their shop, in Clyde Street, was granted. The Mayor, on behalf of the Finance Committee, reported that £450 has been lodgnd in tho Colonial Bank, on deposit, receipt for three months, at 4M per cent.

Approved of.

The Clerk reported ' that, as decided at last meeting a deputation from the Council had waited upon the Matau Road Board, to urge the metalling of the road between Stirling and the railway terminus; that the Board fully recogpised the necessity for the work and informed the Council that they had repeatedly brought the matter under the notice of the .Government, who only replied that they had'no funds at their disposal' for the, work. It was ultimately arranged that a joint Deputation from the Board and the Council, should wait upon his Honor the Superintendent to urge ,the necessity and importance of the work— upon an early day to be arranged by hiiiti — the Town Clerk. The following were appointed members of deputation on behalf of the Council :— The Mayor,*and Councillors Hogg and Hope. The Works Committee reported that they were having the fences of the Lower Reserve repaired, .as desired at last meeting.

Councillor Hope complained, that although he had several times brought the matter of, repairs required on tlie street leading to the Balciutha Hotel before the . Council, and although it had been referred to the Works Committee at last meeting, nothing seemed to have beon done in the matter. •-; -

Tae Mayor replied, that the Works Committee had examined the street and had ordered the work tb be executed, as well as some other works in the same quarter. The works had been commenced a few days ago. ,_ , ■ ,

Councillor Maison asked, leave, tb postpone the motion standing in his name regarding voting a sum not less than £100 for tho -removal of the bluffs on Hasborotigh Hoad. '

Leave granted. . The Clerk, reported, that a large amount of last year's rates was still unpaid.

He was instructed to insert ah advertisement in the ' Clutha Leader,' intimating that the whole must be paid before Tuesday, the 14th instant. It was alsa directed that ' summonses be issued \vithout'f farther notice, for recbvery'of all not paid by that date. ...:;.
