-Ho***, gracious we arc* to grant to the dead Those wide, vague lands in the foreign sky, Reserving the world for ourselves instead; For we must live^ though, others must die ;
And what is the world that we keep, I pray ? True, it has glimpses of dews and flowers ; Then youth and love are here and away, Like mated birds— but nothing is purs.
Ah, nothing indeed, bujt we clinj to.it all. It is nothing, to hear one's' own heart beat,-, It is nothing to see ene's o^n. tears' fall j V et surely the'to^th of our lifo is sweet.
Yes, the breath of ouc life is sweet, I fear We wore loathito give it for all wff know Of that charmed jcountry we hold sodear, Far into whose heauty the breathless go.
Yet certain yto are, when we see them fade : Out of the pleasant, light of t^e sun, Of the sands of gold in the palmleafa shade, - - And the strange high jewels alltli^ae have won.
