THURSDAY and FRIDAY, 6th and 7th Ins.. ! (By our Special Reporter.) The weather was all that could be! desired, but the attendance was not so j . goqd as : in , ' former years, there being 1 ij only some 300 persons present. : The! betting or taming ring was fully re- :| presented, together with the. usual ac-! companiments, such as the red, white! aud blue; "dbbdle^em-bUok, 1 the shooting; target by- the inimitable Briggs, Lome! Pool, Aunt* Sally, &c, &c. There were' two. .licensed- booths on the ground,! owned by Mr Simmonds of the Com-] mercial Hotel, Tapanui, and a tem-i perance booth by Mr Braudigam. Both! seemed to do a good trade. Anexpressj figured as a fruit stall, arid supplied; some most excellent cherries and straw-, hemes ; thus the inner man was Well; cared for , by the Tapanuites. .During; both days all passed off without the; slightest bitch' or accident. The stewards, starter* and Clerk, of : the Course,, (among whom .John Mackellar. •"" Esq., 1 was included), executed their allotted task well, and to whom we beg* to.,ac-! nowledge the attention and assistance rendered to our representative,.. Dido fell away; his rider could not get him to answer to his call in time ; in the last half-mile he pulled over a distance, but was too late in putting oh a spurt. :It was, however, evident that had Dido's, rider understood him, that Tape would have, been his. A protest was entered by Mr Cameron against Jenny Lind, and which was sustained, by the stewards, the stakes were therefore. allotted to Mr Mackellar's Dido, but after considerable , discussion, . it was . arranged by the stewards to re-consider their former decision.
