The most important event that has •occurred for a long time in the Australian shorthorn world is the determination of Mr Richard Morton, of Mount Derrimutand Skelsrhergh-hall, to reside for the future with his friends in England, scad to dispose of the splendid herd he so lately left behind him. The step; he has resolved to take was not wholly unexpected by his colonial friends. Mr Morton had.somewhat injured his health by a lengthened term of close application to his business, and no one will grudge him his well-earned ease. But Victoria can ill spare men of his stamp. Shorthorn breeders of high attainments are, like true poets, " born, not made ;" something more than' mere industry is needed to raise -theni to eminence — : that something is natural aptitude. The sale of Mr Morton's herd, which comprises at present about fifty head of the highest strains, is intended tp take place towards the close of February. A telegram received on Tuesday by Messrs Richard Gibson and Co., from Mr Morton, announces the sale of an annual draft of forty head of Lord Dunmore's Bates's cattle, at an average of £670 per headi The whole of the late Mr W. Torr's herd, of Aylesby, had also been . sold ; they were partly of the 'Booth and- partly of the Bates strain ; they realised the satisfactory average of £509. High-pedigreed shorthorns are evidently as much prized •as ever in the old country ; at no distant date exportations hence to Great Britain will probably become not uncommon.—* Australasian.'
