Matau Ploughing Match.

l\" ' The Matau annual Ploughing match ' Kon Messrs Smaill's farm, ha, on Friday last. The r some time, previous "had i*o*rable, -and it ivas feared would to some extent interfile success of the match, rning was fine, T>ut throughr it was cold and showery, ver, did not prevent a large both of competitors and id it was admitted on all, c the match was in every : best the committee has yet is only four years since a ow plough was first brought to contest the honors of the day at a matcli on Inch Clutha. Since then their numbers have increased every succeeding year, and on Friday last the double-furrows out-numbered tHe single ploughs, there being twelve of the former and only ten of the latter. Not only have the numbers increased, but those whe were present at their first introduction on Inch Clutha could not help seeing that an immense improvement has been made in the quality of the work executed. It is evident that settlers now appreciate the saving effected by the use of these ploughs, and the indications are that j^-he single-furrow implement will graHtaaliy he abandoned, except for work Br whicli double ploughs are unsuited. present on Friday were forcibly HHB Q d e( i of one feature at least of the HHie of agriculture prevalent in the HHrly days of the province by the of a couple of bullocks in the They helonged to Mr Wright, Bond were noble animals, for which we their owner refuse fifty guineas. I they were in charge of a juvenile, T easily secured a place on the prize Mist. .In the case of one or two allot|^nents the least said about the quality of the work the better, but as a rule it was highly satisfactory. It may be mentioned that last year the Tokomairiro settlers sent down their first prize ploughmen in the various classes, and toipk the first honors home with them.

Tjie same arrangement was again ap-*-parently made this year, but the Clutha

men were prepared for it, and kept the j^first honors in the district. Toko- ] ' mairiro may take the hint that the Clutha will in all likelihood contest for I the honors on the Tokomairiro ground f next year, and it is to be hoped the amount of the prizes will be made something near to the value of tbe Matau prizes, so that even the winners __. may not lose by the transaction. There were some magnificant teams of horses upon the ground, and amongst Mr M'Farlane'a lot we noticed a very promising entire — Young Scotchman — — hr-ed hy Mr Robert Stephenson, Taieri. Of harness the display was the best we have ever seen at any match in the colony. Amongst the visitors was a considerable sprinkling of ladies, who notwitstanding the inclement weather took an active interest in the contest, and remained on the field till the prizes were awarded. Mr Dalgetty had a refreshment booth I ground, which was liberally sed. Mr Higgins also had a here hot coffee and ins were retailed to all and At noon a luncheon was i by the Messrs Smaill to the itors and the committee, judges were Messrs M'Lay. and Grieve, and who gave their as shortly after the contest was or eluded, and upon these being read °ver by the Secretary, the prizes were - a t once handed to the respective • winners. The whole arrangements in connection with the match were most successtully carried out by the committee, who as well as the hon. Secretary very great praize ih the matter.
