+ Fok several weeks past operations at the new railway bridge have been suspended. The masons who were employed at the work have left for other works, while a number of workmen are waiting idle about the township in the* hope that operations will again speedily be resumed. Various rumors have been afloat as to the cause of this suspension of work, and it is generally understood that Mr John Watson, the contractor, has for reasons best known to himself " thrown up the job." But whatever may be the cause, it is manifest that the least possible delay should be allowed to occur in carrying out this work. It is one at which only a limited number of men can be employed at a time, and therefore its progress cannot be forced beyond a certain rate. Although no suspension of work had taken place, there is every reason to believe this bridge will ultimately prove a hinderance to the opening of the line Dunedin to Invercargill. . The formation of that portion of the line not yet contracted for can be accomplished in a few months if necessary. It is not so with this gigantic bridge, and hence the reason why the Government should see to it that no unnecessary delay be permitted to occur in its erection.
