The ' Mining Journal ' anticipates that at no distant date Indian coal will be the only locomotive fuel used on Indian railways. The locomotive superintendent of the Madras Railwayhas made a series of experiments with a view to ascertain the comparative merits as locomotive fuel of English, Australian, and Indian coal,- and it is found from the results of the trials that Indian coal is of excellent quality and most economic. The price of English coal, delivered in Madras, is Rs 32-6*4 (about £3 4s 6d) ; Australian, Es 2713"l(or £2 15s); while the cost per ton of Indian coal is but Rs 21-8 (or £2 3s), delivered to the Company. It is understood that it is the intention of the Company to make large purchases of the Bengal Coal, which they expect to obtain at a still loiyer rate per ton, although it is fully equal in quality. Speaking of Adelaide Ristori, who is. about to visit Australia, " JEgles" says : — " For 80 performances in Rio, Buenos Ayres, and Monte Video, I see she received L 56,125. The diamonds she has had presented to her at different times would stock a London jeweller. With most of the crowned lieads of Europe she seems to have been on terms of the closest intimacy, whilst Cavour and Garibaldi, bear testimony to her talents' and patriotism. y Still more* valuable are the tributes io t her genius of such literary experts asXamartine, A.Dumas and Alfred de Vigny. In July .next 'Ristori will appear in Sydney, and than in Melbourne."
