This lme of Railway is 4J mites in length, passing orer a perfectly evel tract of country and the proprietors of the land through, which the line will pass have agreed to give, up to the Company, free of all compensation, sufficient land on which to construct the Railway say a strip one chain wide. Tlis line will run through the finest grainproducing lands in New Zealand ;' consequently the traffic connot fail to be very large, independent of the coal, which of itself would be sufficient- to warrant the promoters in recommending the undertaking to the public. . , ; The coal-fields are 1 ,000 acres in extent, and are now in" active operation, with every appliance^on the ground necessary fdr turning out 400 tons of coal per day. There is a tramway from the mouth of the pits to where it is proposed the station should be. A paTt from the seam of coal now worked by the Coal Company, a new sram has been discovered and carefully tested, the thickness being 27ft. 6in.,with rise enough to carry away any water which may be met with. This seam can be worked at little expense, as it will be approached by a short drive into the kill, no shaft being required. The. coal is so favorably known in the province as being second to none for household purposes,. andalso .for . haying, excellent steam -producing properties, that ifc is unnecessary to say more about ifc, many prefer, riog it to Newcastle, even at present rates charged ; but, on the completion of the pror posed line, it will he landed in Dunedin; at a price thafc will pay .the shareholders hand, somely, and defy competition. The coal: can be delivered in trucks at Stirling-Station at 123 per ton, and in Dunedin at 18s to 20a per ton. The price hitherto has been 40s per ton. The promoters have already sent to England for rails of same section and weight as those used by the General Government. The l|ne has been; surveyed .by theE&ghieer. and approved of by the Provincial Govern ment, who have given their sanction tcj the objects of the company>and h/ve agreeid tp.. give every facility to the carrying out o£ ihe same. The promoters have obtained estimates of the cost of constructing the Railway, and are in communication with contractors who: are willing to undertake the completion of I the line/rffiady^ for traffic, ior* an sjim pf :LIS,'2QO ? including the cost of permanent way materials. It is not contemplated to call up more than L 15,000 of the capital.
