School Committee.

The district school committee met in the schoolhouse on the evening of Monday. Present: Rev. Mr M'Ara and Messrs Hope, Barty, Robertson, Ross, Crammond Mason, and Bain. Mr Crammond presided. An account from Mr Livingston, Duned^n, for L3 1 odd waß submitted for payment, the amount having been incurred for books to be awarded to the pupils attending the school as prizes. Mr Rods objected to the account being passed, on the ground that it had not been properly authorised, and that the charge lor prizes had on previous occasions been defrayed by private donation. The minute authorising the expenditure having been referred to, the account was, on the motion of Mr Robertson, passed for payment. The following communication from the Secretary to the Education Board was read and considered: —

" Sir, — At s meeting of the Education Board, held this day, there was considered a recommendation from a school committee to the effect that the Board ebould bring under the notice of the Government the advisability of getting a bill passed at the ensuing session of the Provincial Council to enable the school committee of any district, desirous of doing so, to levy a small assessment on all rateable property within the district fox school pnfposes. " The Board agreed to refer the recommendation to the favorable consideration of the Government, and I was instructed to ascertain the opinion of the different school committees throughout the province on this matter.

" I have therefore to request you to be good enough to lay this circular before your school committee, and to send me aa soon as possible any resolution in reference thereto that may be adopted by your committee.-^I am, &c, ■■ John Hislop."

Mr Ross was of opinion the committee should decline expressing any opinion on the point. This district had no prospect of requiring to levy a rate for education purposes, and the fact that other districts might require such was, in his opinion, no good reason why the Clutha should be! called upon to count enanpe ; the proposedj measure.
