Tokomairiro Jockey Club Races.

The annual race meeting of the Tokomairiro Jockey CJub took -place at the racecourse there on Tuesday and yesterday. About 300 persons are estimated to have been present. In these days, when disqualification has become an act of frequent occurrence, it is satisfactoiy to say that each event on the cards appeared to b^e keenly contested and honestly won. A good deal of disappointment was expressed at the non-success of Right Bower, who, as may be readily imagined, was one of the leading favorites. Mr Cotton's Envy was unque°tionably the best brought- out horse on the field. Merry Monarch, on the other hand, although successful, was mainly indebted for the race to the able manner in which he was handled by his jockey— Stewart Waddle. A palpable defect was apparent ia the handicapping for the trotting match. The horse that got the greatest start actually gained r instead of losing distance, as the race proceeded. Of course it must be borne ia mind that handicapping trotting horses is a much more difficult matter than the handicapping of racing horses. Very tew of the hookmakiDg fraternity were present. Indeed, very little speculation of that kind was noticeable, and what little was done was confined to such transactions aa halfcrown sweeps. The course was in good condition, and the weather both day's fine.
