SECOND DAY.
(BY ELECT RIG TELEGRAPH. ) The weather yesterday was beautiful, presenting a great contrast in this particular to that of the first clay. A great number of persons were present, and altogether the races were rather better contested, on account of the improved state of the course. After Templeton's grand performances on the first day, he was made hot favorite for the Jockey Club Handicap — 100 to 75, and, in some instances, even 2to 1 being laid on him. This was a bad look-out for bookmakers, the most of whom had a heavy knock over the Cup, as scarcely any other horse was backed Ngaro was scratched the night previous, and Tripolis this morning. The Hurdle Race was a great upset, Sir Tatton having been heavily backed since the entries came out. The result was— Kildare, 1 ; Maid of the Mill, 2 ; Sir Tatton, 3. Betting : Even on Sir Tatton, 3 to 1 on field, bar 1. Fine start was effected, and first hurdle cleared by Ivanhoe, Kildare, and another in advance, Sir Tctton, fourtb, fell heuvily at hurdle, throwing his jockey over his head; Unknown also baulked, and his owner pulled jockey off, and got on his back, but too late. Rest went on round, and Sir Tatton's jockey remounted, and followed a long way in the rear. At second hurdle, Ivanhoe baulked, but was soon set going again. At second time past Stand, Kildare led, Ivanhoe second, Maid of the Mill third — all within a length of each other ; Sir Tatton fourth, Banjo in meantime fallen, and others were out of it, Maid of Arrow also falling at fourth hurdle. This order was retained all round, the jumps being cleared beautifully, but Sir Tatton toiling along hopelessly. Coming up the straight, Cotton, who had ridden splendidly, increased his lead with Kildare, aud came in a winner by half a dozen lengths, and a similar distance separated Ivanhoe and Maid of the Mill, second and third ; Sir Tatton fourth. Time, 4min. 20sec. — 7secs. quicker than last year. Malone, rider of Maid of* Arrow badly hurt, and was ?ent into Hospital. Sir Tatton came in very lame. Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap — Templeton, 1 ; King Philip, 2 ; Gamecock, 3 ; Right Bower, 4 ; Castaway, Atlas, Barwon, Tripolis, Tadmore, Lyndon, were scrttched. King Philip carried 21b overweight ; Delamain declared to win with Templeton. Betting — 100 to 50 on Templeton, from 2to I against any other. After one break away, a bad start was effected, Templeton being left at post until others were off six or seven lengths. Gamecock, Hercules, and Right Bower rushed off with the lead, Traitor and King Philip being next, Templeton doing his best to make up lost ground. Rowland, seeing the state of affairs, made the pace terrific with Hercules, passing the stand the first time in advance, Right Bower second, Gamecock third ; Templeton crawling up abreast, with King Phillip next, and Tadmor last. The favorite had all his work cut out, for opposite the stand only he began to pull up to tbe leaders, and the excitement was something* intense. Thence gradually he came up on the outside, ahd at the three-quartar mile post Hercules fell back, having done his work well. Gamecock and the Bower, however, were not to be denied, and kept on almost level terms with Delemain's horses— the old one especially going splendidly. . Until in the straight, it looked the King's race all over ; then the whips were brought out, and Templeton, answering gamely to his jockey's call, came in the winner by a clear length ; Gamecock, after running a plucky race, tired at the finish, and King Philip took second place ; Right Bower was fourth, Traitor was fifth, and Hercules sixth. Time, 3min. IBsecs. Rous Stakes — Somnambula, 1 ; Elfin King, 2 ; Spritsail, 3. Betting — Even against Elfin King; 6 to 4 against Somnambula ; 2to 1 against Spritsail ; sto 1 any other. Elfin King and Sir William jumped off at the start; but Somarabula and Spritsail rushed to the front, and passing the stand the chesnut filly led ; Spritsail next, pulling double ; then came Elfin King, half a length behind Hutchinson's mare ; Sir William being last. Opposite the stand the same order was kept, but a clear length and a half between each horse ; then King let out, passed Spritsail at the three-quarter post, and endeavored to catch Soinambula, who was still in advance* Tip the straight they flew; but Richards ro.de Noswortby's, filly with great judgment, and she had plenty in hand as she passed the stand, two clear lengths ahead of Elfin King. Spritsail fell off at the finish, and was a bad third j Sir William last. Time, 2mins. SOsecs, For the Novel Raoe, Blackbird and Wild Deer were scratched. Betting — Even on Kathleen ; sto 4 against Earl of Lynne j 2 to I against Verbena and Wee Lad. Lyndon: won easily by lengths. Earl of Lynne was sold for L 32.
