RAILWAY WORKS.
Mr R. Crammond said— l have one or two matters to bring under the notice of this meeting. The first is in connection with the opening of the through line of railway to the Chain Hills. So far as I have heard, that portion of the line is now well nigh finished, and it is very necessary that it should be opened for traffic at the earliest possible date. (Hear, hear.) The next subject to which I wish to draw your attention is the erection of a temporary station at the end of the line as completed. lam led to believe that it is intended by the Government to make the station at the township of Stirling, the terminus for thiß place. Now, I contend that would be very inconvenient indeed for the traffic to and from Balclutha, Seeing that we have got the railway to a point within the
municipal t boundaries, it would be very little expense for tbe Government to erect a temporary station at that place. Ihe next thing to which I wish to direct attention is the dangerous state of the new roadway leading from the railway terminus up the banks of the river. It is caHed Hasborough Road. If left in its present sta*e, that road will be very dangerous indeed, and something ought certainly to be done in the way of fencing it in. I only throw out this as a suggestion for your consideration. The other matter is in refer, nee to the survey of the proposed railway line from Balclutha to Catlin's River. List session the Government promised that the survey should be completed as early as possible* and I think the time has come when that promise should be redeemed. I 'will therefore move — " That the following be appointed a district railway committee to promote the following objects: Ist. To urge upon the Govern-, ment the necessity of opening the maiu line of railway for traffic between the Chain Hills and the Clutha River at the earli.-st possible date ; 2nd To provide a temporary station at the Balclutha terminus within the municipality, so as to save the extra cost of road traffic to and from Balclutha and the terminus at the township of Stirling ; 3rd To urge upon the Government the necessity of protecting the traffic along the Haaboxough Road to the station, by fencing the road or otherWS3; 4.h To urge the immediate completion of the survey of the proposed line of railway from Balclutha to Catliu'-s River ; said committee to consist of his Worship the Mayor, Councillors M'Neil, Ma on, Dunne, ifilgour, Smith, and Messrs Ritchie, MOwn, Gow, Macdonald, Ryrie, Bre-ver, Carrick, and the mover." The chairman said that while he quite sympathised with the motion, he was in a position to. inform them that the Government had arranged to go on with the survey of the Catlin's Biver line without delay. (Applause.) Mr Dunne said the Government had been already applied to about erecting a temporary station, and had declined, on the ground that the bridge would be completed as soon as the through lineMr Crammond— The line is now complied, but not the bridge. Mr Dunne— Nor will the bridge be completed for some years to ceme. The chairman said that although the negotiations had come to nathing at ih&t time, now that the line was formed and the bridge barely begun, it was quite possible the Government would be prepared toi reconsider its decision. i The motion was then put and carried j with acclamation. i
