Waste Lands Board.

i ♦ • Messrs Popplewell and Baxter asked the Bc?ard on what terms it would ; grant them a lease of two acres of the ; Kaitangata Township Reserve, for a ! slaughter-yard. The app'ication was referred to the Inspector of slaughter-houses for the Tokomairiro and Clutha districts, for i advice. John Tolmie requested permission to construct a water- race 31 chains in Ipop-th adjoining his property at Catlin's River. Resolved tbat the applicant should forward survey of the proposed race to the Board. Mr John Deens requested to apply for th« south-eastern part of section 50, Waihemo. — Refused, \ A memo of Mr Archibald and the Chief Surveyor was read in reference to the mill site at the Mataura. It appears from the remarks made by the Chief Surveyor that there whs a strong probability of the site becoming very valuable, as it was in tbe centre of a large agricultural district and on tbe line of tbe Southern Trunk Railway, and also commanded unlimited water power. There are at present two or more applications for ir. The recommendation of the Government that Mr Hungerford should be appointed to look after the Glenomaru Bush Reserve was approved. At a meeting •• of the Board held a fortnight ago, it was resolved that Mr Pollock's lease of these rese.ives should be cancelled, and tbe matter was referred to the Government for the opinion of the Provincial Solicitor whether or not this course could be adopted. The following memo, was now read from Mr Stout ; — " I think it would .be better to begin an action, if, after the demand of the Chief Commissioner, tbe lessee refuses to surrender his lease. Jt is true tbat the Crown Lands Act gives the Chief Commissioner power to resume possession of Crown lands on the non-performance of contract- but that resumption must be in a legal way, that is, by action." It was resolved that the Chief Commissioner should act in accordance with the advice of the Provincial Solicitor.
