We beg to direct the attention of our Mataura readers to an advertisement announcing that Messrs Macrorie and Cuthbertson, auctioneers, Invercargill, have arranged to hold 'quarterly sales of stock in the district. The first of the serKs is announced for the 25 h March, at the close of the Wyndham show. The usual meeting of the Municipal Counil was held on the evening of Tuesday The Mayor presided. Councillors Dunne and Kilgour were also present. A letter was read from Mr A. C. Campbell, complaining that the Corporation works executed in the vicinity of his property had caused the surface water to accumulate on his piemues The comp.aint was referred to the works committee for attention. Mr Ralph Shaw, on behalf of Committee of the Mining and Progress Association, at Swi'zers applied to the Waste Land Board to get the sales of the township of Waikaia held at the Warden's office, Switzers, instead of, as formerly, at the Survey office Lawrence. The Board agreed to appoint an officer there, and refJerrcl the appoin'm nt of auctioneer to the Government. Mr Cohnell, for Mr Dvn n an M,Rae, inquired of the Waste Land Board at its last meeting whether the balance of land in the Waikaka Hundred, not included in the resolution of the Board at its last sitting, ia to be open for selection in the usual way ; and "whether the surveyed sections in K&iwcra, Pukerau, Waipahee, and JiTuriwao hundreds, upon which no improvements had been made, are to be open for selection at 20s per acre. The reply made was that the Board had no information to give. The regular, monthly meeting of tbe Balclutha School Committee was held in Schoolhouse on Monday evening. 'I here were present, Messrs. Crammond, M'Ara, Barty, Maaon, Hope, Robertson, and Ross, The secretary, Mr Bain, being absent, the minutes were not forthcoming for confirmation. Mr Grigor read a circular from the*Edacation Board relative to fhe regulation of Bchool fees. After discussion it was agreed that the whole eubject of arranging and collecting 1 school fees be left over for consideration at next meeting, and that the maximum charge for any pupil be 12- per quarter. One family of destitute child r^n was,, on the recommendation of Mr Ross, received as free pupils. The Matau Road Board held its monthly meeting on the 25th ult. . The members present were-— Messrs Inglis (Chairman), Grigor, Smith and Bell. The following business was transacted :— The accounts to the 30th June last were made up for transmission to the Government. Mr Grigor was instructed to get the lower embankment on hill road, No. 1 contract, raised a little higher. Tenders were ordered to be called for the lease of the river punts for the current year. The clerk was instructed to write to Mr M'Kissock, ranger, requesting that the roads might be kept clear of cattle, horses, and sheep. A resolution was passed that a notification be inserted in the local paper — the CltJtha Leader — to the effect that the immediate payment of rates will be insisted . upon. . Mr Bell, was authorised to employ day labor for the execution of certain road works in the vicinity of his property. Mr Inglis was instructed to get the ruts on the main road filled up. The next meeting was fixed to take place 22nd inst., 6t 6 pirn, Vox populici writes to usas follows : — " Sir, ' — The 'Otago Witness,' • Clutba Leader,' and other journals- have recently spoken indiscriminately of the Governor as the Marquiß of Normandy and the Marquis ofNormanby.
