NEW PUBLIC BUILDINGS.
«. We are indebted to the projectors for particulars regarding the following buildings in course of being erectrd. or about' to be contracted for, in this and the surrounding districts : — CLUTHA ATHENJEUM. This valuable institution is now in course of being provided for with a fixed habitation. The contract, as many of our readers are no doubt aware, has been taken up by Mr Alex. Bain ; the frame work having been already fixed. The building site, although perfectly accessible, is as matters presently stand with the township, back some distance from the main street. The probabilities are, however, that before very long that particular portion of the town will assume an importance with which at present it can hardly be credited. Running as the street does in a direct line with the bridge, aod with the prospect of havi )g the railway terminus built upon it, it must eventually become a leading thor ughfare, so tbat after all thee is not much reason to suppose that the situation is ill chosen. The building itself will cover an area 39 fv-tt long by 16 broad. It will, when completed, ba subdivided into three apartments, with a hall seven fett wide _ running through the centre. The principal apartment — the reading-room-will occupy a space 29 x 21 -the other two b;in^ fifteen feet square. A good lofty ceiling ha-* been provided for— the wall-^ being 16ft. 6in. high. Inside, th> building will be plastered, aod the walls partly covered with dressed weatherboarding. The external appearance, as shown by the elevation plan is neat and substantial, rather than gaudy and superficial. The fiont design has four square pillars, FU.iporting a heavy cornicing, with a pediment or ornamental crowi-insr in the centre. For this part of the building American dressed timber will he used. •he doors are to be hung on what is known as climax hinges, so as to provide against disturb mcc occasioned by parties parsing in and out, slamminjr the doors behind them. Barring unforseen accident or contingency the building will be completed and ready for occupation the end of next month. The contract price is L 614, and it is satisfactory to know thathe entire sum has been provided for.
THE CHURCH OP ENGLAND.
Tenders have been called for the con struction of this edifice. The Committee of management are to be congratulated on the excellent site secured by them. As may be known, it occupies a central position to Elizabeth- street on the one fide, and Renfrew- street on the ether. The style of building projected belongs to the purely Gothic design of architecture. The transept of the building will extend to 33 feet, with a breadth of 18 The nave 19 x 18. and the chancel 11 x 8 The walls are designed 10ft. 6 n. high, with an opee roof covered in with shirgle. A spire is provided for, rising from the centre of the building to a height of 32 feet. Three lighted Gothic windows, filled in with latice wok, are provided for, anci altogether the structure when com plet~d will present a really fine imposing appearance. Accommodation is provided for 150 persons — the entire cost of building, &c, being put down at LSOO The plans were prepared by Messrs Mason and Wales, architects, Dunedin.
CLINTON CHURCH.
Plans prepared by bis Lordphip the Bishop for a Church of England to be erected at the rising township of Clinton, will shortly be submitted for building tenders. The design is an adaptation of the Elizabethean and Gothic. Its internal arrangements provides for a porch, vestry, and chancel, the latter being lighted from the top of the walls. The main building will be 52 x 28, capable of seating a congregation of at least 200 people. The chancel walls are to be 15. and the nave 12 feet high. It is likewise proposed to erect a neat little bell tower as part of tbe edifice; the estimated c~'St of the whole being L4OO to LSOO For a rural district the desiun is about as neat and appropriate as could possibly be wished for, and we have very much pleasure in congratulating our Clinton friends upon the prospect of this valuable addition being made to tbe township.
PORT MOLYNEUX CHUECH.
The Presbyterian body, under the pas toral charge of the Rev. Mr Bannerman, located at Port Molyneux, propose erecting a Church 50 feet long by 26 feet broad The style of building decided upon belongs to tbe Elizabethean design, with circular topped windows and an open roof. The front will be wrought in imitation ashler — a bell tower covered with zinc being added. The building will be capable of accommodating 150 persons ; a platform finished with pane) work in front being erected for pulpit purposes.
