The failure of Mr Allender, soap boiler, for L6OOO, following Mr J. C. Morrins failure for L 22.000, has caused a feeling of uneasiness. Both were brought to a climax by pressure of the banks, which are putting the screw on. The large imports and clearances for Home consumption should indicate good business and a sound state of trade, hut the extreme caution of the banks connected with the failures above noticed may bring about a serious commercial crisis. There is a general feeling of uneasiness in commercial circles, and great tightness of money, but the harvest and wool season have improved.
There was a narrow escape from fir c at tbe engine- sheds at the railway station, and, but for its opportune discovery, it would probably have caused serious damage. The fire is attributed to overwork of the engine-drivers, who are now compelled to clean the engine down, necessitating their commencing work between three and four in the morning, and working till seven at night. *
