Clutha Agricultural & Pastoral ANNUAL SHOW.

7'ho Annual Show of this Societyone of the oldest institutions of the kind in Outgo—was held on Friday last, and excited an -amount of- interest worthy ot rhfeeVent. Compared *w;th previous Meetings, the exhibits were in some .-■ respects better, and in others not quite so gcod. Certainly, the number was short, but as regards quality, they compared favorably with anything that has ver been seen in the district. That alliniportant consideration, the weather, was exceptionably fine — a fact which, so doubt, contributed largely to the success of the affair. Its effect on the attendance was conspicuous, the reee «p:s for admission at the gates realising something like seventy-five per cent, more than that of the preceding* year. Although the accessories provided for the creature comfort and convenience of visitors were not by any means extensive, they were not only complete, but likewise commensurate wiih the requirements of the case. A commodious refreshment-booth was erected upon the ground, at which the host of the Newmarket Hotel (Mr. John Dunne) presided with his usual hospitality. With a hot, broiling sun overhead, it will be readily conceded that the booth was not by any means die least grateful resort to visitors; still, we are pleased to add that the conduct of all present was marked by -an absence of over-indulgence, as well f a3 the other concomitants with which such indulgence is usually attended. Mr William Briggs catered for the lighter description of refreshments, while Mr John M'Neil of the Crown Hotel provided a substantial lunch for the Committee of Management. The Balclutha drum and fife band, under tlie able leadership of Mr Jas. Hogg, was present, and discoursed some excellent music. Considering the short time the band has been in existence, the proficiency it has attained was the theme of general comment. The proceedings were upon the whole satisfactory. Jt would, however, be venturing too much to affirm that •hey were complete in every respect. A considerable amount of confusion arose in consequence of a departure from Ixule 2, which inter alia provides that entries must be made within a specified time before the day of exhibition. A latch of this kind might easily have been avoided, and in future the Committee would do well to see that that rule was more strictly enforced. The judges did their work well, and, so far as we can learn, not a syllable has been breathed against the strict impartiality of their awards. Their labors were no*c quite so arduous as they would othevwise have been had the merits of tlie exhibits been as close as they were at some of the previous shows. In a "few instances, however, they were never fineness very close, but comments of this 'kind belong more appropriately- to the succeeding branch of our introductory remarks. Besides a number of silver medals, hon. certificates, &c, money prizes to the extent of about £80 were offered. The awards will show that the money was all kept in the district, arid that the laurels were for the most part won by district competitors. Takiag the prize list or programme in its printed order, we have first the section assigned to catth. In it the entries for shorthorns were pretty complete. The most noticeable of this lot was two cows of the celebrated flock lately sold by Mr G. M. Bell, of Southland, and purchased by Mr Fitzclarence Roberts, Kuriwao. These animals carried away first and second prizes, and attracted a good deal of attention amongst persons interested in the breeding of cattle. Ayrshire stock was but very poorly represented. Entries were not only few but the stock itself was of inferior quality. It is a matter for regret that in a country like this possessing such fine grass lands, that particular breed of cattle should be so very scarce. The reason undoubtedly is,, that stockowners are more largely interested in producing cattle for slaughtering than for dairy purposes, a fact which is no doubt attributable to the absence of a suitable market for the last-named product. Now, however, that settlement is on the increase, and our urban centres are becoming better populated, there is every likelihood that farmers will find it to be to their mteresD to give more attention to the rearing of this class. The " extra " section was much better represented, the quality of exhibits being not only good, but the entries numerous. The first and second prizes were carried away by Mr Thomas Macdonald, Inch Clutha. For merino sheep the entries were full, and as compared -with previous years the exhibits were quite as good. First prize for the best ram of any age was awarded for an animal lately imported from Australia, by Mr R. Robson, of Whitelea. Under the head " Two rams 2-tooth or under," a pen of very nice sheep were exhibited ; the first prize being carried off by colonial bred animals. The 2iooth ewes and under were likewise very good, The other classes were fairly represented but do not call for special remark. In the show of horses, the draught entires of any age was perhaps the closest contest of the exhibition. There were entered, the New Zealand and Australian JLand Company's Marquis-

Mr John Andrew's Southern Chief, and Messrs Petrie and Anderson's Taien Lad. Between these animals the current opinion was prettv equally divided, and it is said that "bets were freely made upon each of them. Marquis, however, carried the day, the same horse having been adjudged second prize-taker last year. The entry of fillies, foaled. after the Ist September, 1871, as also 1872, and likewise mares and geldings fit for light harness, were both numerous as regards entries, and very superior as regards quality. The thoroughbred class was but; a very poorlot. Mr. Coombe's Little Barwon, which carried away first prize for entire horses (any age), looked rather light for the production of good useful hacks ; still, it had all the appearance of being a well-bred animal. The trotting horse Snip, well known in the district, and who has upon more than one occasion figured well upon the local race-course, was adjudged the best hack from amongst a number of creditable exhibits. No entries" whatever were made for pigs, and under the head of poultry the only exhibit worthy of note was class 63, in which some very fair Brahma cocks were shown. The subjoined is the prize list and awards : — CATTLE. Attending Members — Messrs James Petrie and A. Simpson. -SHORTHORN. Judges: J. Dickison, Tapani; J. Scott, Waiwera; Robert Paterson, Clutba.
