*OuT correspondent writes:— The 'fine weather is bringing the annual influx of summer visitors to this district. In anticipation of these pleasure-seekers, extensive alterations and additions have, been made to tbe Alexandra Hotel, an establishment favorably kown for the "quiet and orderly manner in which it is conducted, combined with the civility -and attention, shown by the proprietor to his guests. 1 Messrs Wright, Ballocb, and Co., 'con- . tractors for part of the road between this ; place and Balclutha, are setting on with [ the work rapidly. They have had many ' drawbacks to contend with. Despite the ' fact that they have all along been paying j the highest rate of Wages, they have exl perienced considerable difficulty in getting ■ the requisite amout of labor. Parties unacquainted with the route followed by the ' new line of rpad can form but a very imI -perfect idea of the advantages it commands,

Tt is true that woolgrowers in the neighborhood ha*e commenced shearing, but as yet the clip has not reached us. The new steamer now in course of being built for the river trade, is getting on as quick as circumstances will admit. They talk of having it Completed in the course of four months. At all events I think we may rely upon the trade being ohce more opened up by steam navagation, in -good time for next years produce-
