INDIA AND THE EAST.
Bombay, ( Oct. 22. The ship. lJndstone, from Melbourne to Calcutta, had 150 horses on Board. All the horses were suffocated, in. consequence of the hatches being, battened down, Colombo, Oct. 24. Governor Gregory opened the Legis-' lative Council at Ceylon on October 14th. s ' "' . The revenue for the past year was the largest known -— amounting to L 1,300,000. ' Coffee continues to rule very high in price. Sir William Ayres, ex-Tndian official, is the new Governor of Mauritius. He is very highly spoken of. There is a rumour that Lord Wharncliffe succeeds Lord Northbrook as Viceroy next year, but it is not believed in India. The Viceroy has recovered from the attack of fever. The prospects of the crops now are very good. The famine is at an end, and the relief operations close at the end of October. Floods have occurred in some districts.
Only 29 deaths altogether are attributed to famine in Bombay.
. Sir A. Clark's Government are bent upon developing the great resources of the Malayan Peninsula. Three thousand five hundred disciplined troops under General Liug arrived in three steamers; 3000 more follow.
A great typhoon has occurred in Hong Kong and Macao, which caused great loss of life and property. A severe earthquake has teken place in Japan.
