THE TWELFTH OF AUGUST.
(Condensed from the Scotsman.) j Those persons interested in sport and who have watched the -dolorous* accounts from the moors in all parts of the country as to the prospects ofthe I grouse shooting this season,* -will have been prepared for the statement that the " Twelfth" has this year proved almost ''• a complete failure. Throughout the country the disease amongst the grouse seems to have been the main cause of the scarcity, and. from several districts,, notably Inverness and the West of Scotland, it is stated that the malady is still rife amongst birds, and that unless precautions are used for the preservation of the' reihaming few, this I favorite game bird will become altogether exterminated. The best shooting seems to have been secured in Banff- j shire, Argyleshire, Wigtowhshire, and ' the largast bag is secured, to the former county, where two gun? killed 87-^ brace of grouse, and 100 hares.
