The Clutha Leader. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1874.

In another column we the speech of His Excellency the Governor in proroguing Parliament on Monday last. We had intended in this issue commenting upon it, and the extraordinary character of the legislation of the past session. When going to press, however, we had intimation from Mr. Thomson, member for the Clutha District, that he will address his constituents here on Monday evening. We therefore defer giving expression to our views upon the subject till after hearing his explanations. In the mean time we would say that it is the duty of the electors; to make every other engagement;; give place to the meeting on Monday;evjening, and show to thepowers that bethat they value their political privileges, and are prepared to maintain their constitutional rights—their b-.rth rigtits. In the opinion of m any of the thoughtful,

able, and honest-; politicians throughout ; the Colony,! an attempt is now made to*! undermine jind disregard these rights. tp Every one jwill h|ave an opportunity of|| hearing and judging for himself on Mon- J| day evening, and if the meeting is not i£J crowded one,, then there may be soma £ show of reason for asserting that it i» : -^ unnecessary to consult the people e^en --^ when their Constitutional rights, are in- ]"i volved. „
