The Clutha Leader. THURSDAY JULY 23, 1874.
♦ The result of the present Mayoral Election must ,'be satisfactory to the The gentleman who has been elceted by the suffrages of his fellow citizens is one who feels that the welfare of the place is a matter of considerable importance. The interest of the community has without doubt been paramount with him in all his actions, and in electing him to the highest civic post, the inhabitants of Balclutha have shown their ready recognition of merit, and their lull determination to promote the right man to the right place. The election has been a hotly contested one, and the rival candidate is a gentleman who, although defeated is not disgraced, and notwithstanding the honor this year has not been conferred upon him, he may nevertheless look forward to the pleasure" of filling the post, and filling it worthily, on fome future occasion. We believe the" fight has been a keen one, and that coaches and buggies, with or without wheels, were impressed into the service of the respective candidates. Every body seemed to lend a ready and willing hand towards the one great end, and the partisans of both sides appeared to work with that zeal and earnestness which showed that they were determined to leave ho stone unturned to secure the return of their favorite representative. We believe that the Municipality could not have secured a gentlemen more qualified to fill the position of Mayor than the present Mayor- elect, and we confidently think that the already rising city of Balclutha will continue to progress under his rule, and that he will carry on the work of improvement inaugurated by his predecessor in office, aud so successfully promoted up to the present time. We must regret losing the services of our late Mayor, which have been so beneficial to the township ; but as this civic honor is a rolling one, we can only say it is in the highest degree satisfactory to find that the choice of the citizens has been at present such as to form tbe commencement of a roll of names which will, as time goes on, prove to | posterity tbat, even in the days of its infancy, Balclutha city could boast of having inhabitants to whom its prosperity and successs were matters (of paramount, importance.
