Student radio to return

Radio UFM will officially be back broadcasting early next year. There was some doubt about the station’s future when it closed in September, two months earlier than expected, with a five-figure operating loss for the year. At a meeting of the University of Canterbury’s student association’s executive last week, it was unanimously decided to continue the station next year.
The association’s president, Mr Chris Whelan, said UFM would continue its tradition of alternative music, but “in a more mainstream way.” It would focus on being a “pre-emptive” station, playing B sides of popular hits and attempting to be ahead of trends.
The 18 to 25 age group would be targeted by UFM,. and that way the station hoped to appeal more to advertisers and avoid previous debt problems.
Features of UFM, such as specialist music shows, would remain, but would be placed in more appropriate time slots, Mr Whelan said.
