In brief
Pursuit fall
A motor-cyclist and his passenger were taken to Christchurch Hospital last evening after they fell from their motor-cycle while being chased by a traffic officer. The pair, both male, were knocked unconscious in the accident, but suffered only minor injuries. The accident happened about 6.30 p.m., on State highway seven near Medbury in North Canterbury. The motor-cyclist was being chased for travelling at excess speed. Mother sought Tokoroa detectives say they are looking for the mother of a newborn baby found in Lake Moananui, near Tokoroa, on Friday. Constable Chad Goessi said the body of a European female baby was found by a woman walking her dog along the lake edge. The baby appeared to have been in the lake for more than two days, he said. A pathologist’s report said the baby was possibly stillborn.—PA. Romania aid The International Red Cross Committee has launched an appeal for $6 million for immediate medical aid in Romania. An additional $l2 million will be sought for assistance during the next few weeks, when there is likely to be increasing demand for protection, tracing and relief services from the Red Cross. The international committee expects that as it becomes colder in Romania there may be a shortage of warm clothing, blankets and food for those displaced or injured during the fighting. New Zealanders can make donations to the appeal through the Red Cross National Office, P.O. Box 12-140, Thorndon, Wellington, or through local Red Cross centres. Boycott call Animal welfare groups are asking the public to boycott the Spanish International Circus now in Christchurch. Save Animals from Exploitation and Animal Rights Collective, along with the Vegetarian Society, believe the animals used in circuses are treated inhumanely. They say the animals are restricted in small cages or in chains and are subjected to constant travelling. The groups would rather have a circus that did not need to have animals as a drawcard, but rather the excellence of human performers. Body found The body of a Masterton fisherman, Lloyd Alwyn Mac Lean, aged 23, has been found washed up on a beach • near Pahaoa, Martinborough. Mr Mac Lean had been missed after huge seas overturned his 6m fishing boat on Friday—PA. Arson likely A bushfire which 70 volunteers ■ fought for 10 hours yesterday was probably deliberately lit, according to the Wainuiomata chief fire officer, Mr Neville Twort. He . said it was the worst of up to 20 suspicious fires over the last two months. The Wainuiomata police had interviewed a number of people in connection with the fires, but no charges had been laid. The latest fire started about 9 p.m. on Tuesday and strong winds kept it alive until 7 a.m. yesterday. It destroyed between 20ha and 30ha of scrub near Mount Grace and threatened Rimutaka Forest Park.—PA. Strife in surf A helicopter and fishing boat were called to try to rescue a Canterbury surf life-saver who got into difficulty on a surf ski at Gore Bay on Tuesday. Mr Adam Worthington, aged 18, was blown about 3km out to sea when he was caught by a wind change. The helicopter aborted a rescue attempt because of the strong winds. The boat, placed on standby, was not required when Mr Worthington made it to shore. The Canterbury junior surf ski champion fought the strong winds for almost an hour, Senior Constable Kirk Newman, of the Cheviot police, said.
