Week-end medical services busy

Christmas celebrations kept staff at the Bealey Avenue after-hours surgery and the emergency department at Christchurch Hospital busy over the four-day week-end. A nurse at the after-hours surgery said the week-end had been busy with “the normal cuts and scratches.” Some people had cut themselves while carving the Christmas ham,

and a number of children and accidents with new presents such as trampolines or broken toys. Others had suffered cuts and bruises from falls after “imbibing a little too much,” she said. A “virulent” diarrhoea and vomiting bug had also affected a lot of people. She said all the available doctors had been called in to the surgery,

which was open 24 hours each day from Saturday to Tuesday. A nurse at Christchurch Hospital’s emergency department said the week-end had been very busy, mainly with medical problems and people feeling unwell. People from outside Christchurch had come to the hospital, as well as others whose doctors were unavailable on the week-end.
