Queen, Duke to visit from February 1-16
PA Wellington The Queen will arrive on February 1 to begin her longest Royal tour in New Zealand since her 1953-54 tour. The year will feature three Royal visits. Prince Edward will arrive on January 23 for the Commonwealth Games and stay until February 4, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh will arrive on February 1 and leave on February' 16 and Anne, the Princess Royal, will come for a short trip from April 21. The main engagements of the Queen’s visit will be closing the Commonwealth Games, attending the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and opening Parliament For the first time, the Queen will be based in Auckland for a week, then Wellington for the rest of her stay. The Royal yacht Britannia will not sail to New Zealand. The Queen and Duke’s first engagement will begin an hour after they step off their plane in Auckland. They will be taken to the Commonwealth Games village where they will have lunch and be taken on a short tour of the village.

They will return to Auckland on the Saturday afternoon, to watch the Games’ final events and closing the Games. On the Sunday, the Duke will start the fourth leg of the Whitbread round-the-world yacht race. ~ On Monday, February 5, the Queen will open new premises for the Thoroughbred Racing Conference and attend the races at Ellerslie where she will open a new grandstand. On Waitangi Day, the Queen and Duke will fly to the Bay of Islands, be driven to Opua and their barge will be escorted by 22 waka taua (war canoes) across to Hobsons Bay, Waitangi. The signing of the Treaty will be re-enacted there. On February 8, the Duke will fly to Invercargill, Stewart Island and Milford Sound. The couple will re-unite in Queenstown and will take a walk among the people before boarding the T.S.S. Earnslaw for a lake cruise.
