Teacher hearing today

The personal grievance hearing over the board of trustes’ dismissal of a Linwood North School teacher, Mr Mike Britt, will continue today. The hearing, which is to determine whether the board used the correct procedures when dismissing Mr Britt early in November, was adjourned from Monday. Mr Britt was dismissed after allegations of misconduct brought by four parents were upheld. An industrial mediator, Mr Maurice Teen, has been listening

to evidence presented by the board and by the New Zealand Educational Institute which is acting on behalf of Mr Britt. Mr Britt’s advocate, the N.Z.E.I. industrial officer, Mr David Beck, said parents of children who had been in Mr Britt’s class 12 years ago and who had been presented as witnesses for the board, did not get called before the hearing on Monday. Mr Beck said the hearing was purely to determine whether Mr Britt had been unjustifiably dismissed by the Linwood North School board.
