Auckland captain dies in shipwreck

PA Auckland A Dutchman living in New Zealand was among the 23 men who died when the cargo ship • Capitaine Torres went down off Canada. He was Pieter Groenendijk, of Glen Eden, the chief engineer.

The cause of the tragedy in which the 10,000 ton Vanuaturegistered ship went down in a fierce storm in the Gulf of St Lawrence on December 8 is still unknown. For six hours, as the ship battled the storm, three people in the Auckland office of local

agents, Sofrana Unilines (New Zealand), heard the ship’s progress relayed by satellite. An Auckland operations manager, Mr Mike Wade, said the Capitaine Torres seemed to be surviving until the last few moments. The ship was on a delivery

voyage from Europea and was due to arrive in New Zealand in February. It was carrying freight from Canada to Taiwan. It was the last of three ships to be delivered to the company and although the loss had led to reorganisation, customers would not be affected, said Mr Wade.
