Youth jailed for rape
PA Wellington A youth said to have raped his night club drinking companion has been jailed for just under three years. Peter Ross Ellett, now aged 18, was found guilty by a Wellington High Court jury of sexual violation by rape on April 15. He was acquitted on a second charge involving oral sex. Mr Justice Ellis said the offence took place in the early hours of the morning after Ellett and a 17-year-old woman had enjoyed themselves at a night club. They had drunk copious
quantities of liquor and went outside to smoke marijuana. Mr Justice Ellis said the jury must have accepted that the complainant consented to oral sex. However, Ellett then forced full sexual intercourse on her. He said Ellett in general was a stranger to violence. Another fact in his favour was that the young woman, agreeing to oral sex, perhaps led him to believe she would consent to full sex. Ellett was jailed for three years, less 14 days spent in custody on remand.
