Man shoots police dog
PA" M Hastings Constable Grant Diver buried his German shepherd yesterday morning, only hours after a fugitive shot the dog in Hastings. By midday yesterday police had not caught the gunman who blasted Rada with a sawn-off shotgun at point-blank range. Rada and his handler, Constable Diver, were called to Raureka early yesterday morning after a prowler was seen in the area... They had no idea the prowler was armed. > The police team confronted a manat a home in Oliphant Road after following his tracks. Constable Diver unleashed his three-
year-old dog and it ran up to the fugitive. Suddenly there was a bang as Rada was blasted by what the police believe was a sawn-off shotgun. Constable Diver stayed with Rada as the gunman fled. The armed offenders squad was called and immediately cordoned the area. It searched in vain for the gunman. The squad was still searching when called about 10.30 a.m. to Flaxmere where it tear-gassed a house in which an escaped prisoner, Hurae Wairau, was suspected of hiding out. The two incidents are believed not to be lilted.
