Hospital gets all-clear

Christchurch Women’s Hospital has been cleared of a skin infection which affected about 15 babies at the hospital this year. No further confirmed cases of the infection have been reported over the last four weeks. A type of bacteria called staphylococcus aureus, it caused large weeping blisters. The transfer of mothers and babies from Christchurch Women’s to other maternity hospitals resumed yesterday. Transfer were stopped about six weeks ago to stop the infection spreading. Two carriers were

found among the 207 maternity staff members tested since October. They had been treated and repeat tests showed them to be clear of the infection, said the Canterbury Area Health Board’s professional adviser for medical services, Dr John Holmes. Both had returned to work after being relieved of duties for about two weeks while the infection cleared. Soft toys were withdrawn from nurseries at the hospital in October, and have since also been confirmed as carrying the infection.
