LSD finds in mail ‘may rise’
A new mail-sorting system for Christchurch may increase the amount of LSD seized in the city, Customs officers said yesterday. Most LSD smuggled into New. Zealand comes in the post via Auckland, but Christchurch is now getting a greater proportion of mail under a scheme introduced by New Zealand Post last month. More than 16,000 tabs of LSD have been seized by the police and Customs in New Zealand this year,
most of it in Auckland. The senior supervisor for the Customs’ regional southern drugs unit, Mr John Anderson, said the detection rate of LSD may go up because of the new mail system. “There’s no doubt there is quite a bit in the country.” LSD arrives in New Zealand mainly from Europe and San Francisco. It is often impregnated in paper, which makes it hard for Customs officers to detect.
