‘Landmark trial’ for appeal
A Timaru youth will appeal against his recent conviction on a charge of killing an unborn child. Aaron Joseph Henderson, aged 18, a labourer, was found guilty in what was seen as a landmark trial in the High Court in Timaru Jlfl-days ago. He was sentenced to the His lawyer, Mr Rob Harrison, said yesterday that an appeal against conviction would be lodged. Mr Harrison declined to comment on the grounds for the appeal or say how confident he ~wasj)f overturning the decision. the three-day r£J a ? the ;*jury' . .heard- -that Henderson punched and kicked his former girlfriend in the stomach when she was about 26 weeks pregnant. The Crown alleged that this attack killed the unborn child which was delivered stillborn a few days later. The case was seen as a landmark in New Zealand law because it was the first time such a charge had been successfully laid in this country.
